Dental Coverage Under Medicare

Medicare covers almost no dental services. Not exams. Not cleaning. Not dentures. Not drillings or fillings. As of September 2021, changing the law to have dental services covered is being debated in Congress, but nothing has been decided yet. The rare situations in which Medicare covers dental services are when the care is needed to solve a non-dental problem, such as a jaw injury or bone cancer.

Your Options for Dental Coverage

The only way that you will obtain dental services under Medicare is to enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan that offers dental coverage as an extra benefit or enroll in a separate dental plan for seniors on Medicare. With Medicare Advantage Plans, precisely because they are an extra benefit, they tend to be limited.

Some Medicare Advantage Plans do offer good comprehensive coverage. This is where it’s important to have someone like Medicare for Cheap sift through the dozens of plans available in your area to find the plans that offer good comprehensive dental — if that’s what is important to you. But some coverage is certainly better than none. Standalone dental plans may also either bolster your plan’s limited coverage or just may be a good choice for you anyways, depending on your needs.

Because both Medicare Advantage and dental plans for seniors on Medicare are private businesses not affiliated with the federal government, you should contact an agent who understands private health insurance to get them. Let the experienced folks at Medicare for Cheap help you navigate this process, again, at NO COST to you.

When Can I Enroll

There are different times of the year when you can add dental coverage to what you already have or get a separate dental insurance plan entirely.

For Medicare Advantage Plans that offer dental as an extra benefit, your Initial Enrollment Period starts the third month before your 65th birthday and runs for seven months. If you’re already enrolled in Parts A and B, you can add an Advantage plan during the Annual Enrollment Period — beginning October 15 and ending on December 7. Medicare For Cheap can help you enroll in private standalone dental plans at any time during the year!

How Much Does It Cost

As with American health care in general, prices vary widely. Premiums for some Medicare Advantage Plans with dental services can be as low as $0 per month, while others may be around up to $100 per month.

Premiums for stand-alone dental plans range from $50 to $100 per month. In many cases, you get what you pay for, and higher-cost plans generally offer lower deductibles and co-payments, and a broader range of covered services.
